Women Rock Finisher!

I’m so happy there, posing with my Women Rock champagne glass after finishing my first offical 10K!!

The experience was great, a well organized race put together by Team Ortho. The race had a few gradual uphills and downhills, they were challenging, but manageable…good for all racing levels. I really enjoyed running in St. Paul, most of the races I’ve participated in are in Minneapolis, so the change of scenery was fun.

The absolute best part of the race was that after the turnaround, the ladies finishing the race came right back up alongside those of us still in the 1st half. It was so inspiring seeing the ladies that were leading the race come back up..everyone cheered for them, you could hear the cheers going on in waves as they ran up, ran by, and continued on. Women are the best at being cheerleaders and really developing a mini community during a race!

I ran the 5K in an overall racetime of 1 hour 16 minutes, not too shabby! The first half though, was a great 5K, I did it in 37 minutes, which is not the best, but very good for me! After the turnaround I was a little slower in general and at the water stops because I was super thirsty. I was bummed because there wasn’t any water accesible at the beginning of the race, so I started out a little under-hydrated. I don’t usually expect there to be water at the beginning, so its not a critique, just would have been nice.

I do have one critique though…more bathrooms! The lines for the bathrooms, even an hour before the races started, were super long.

Now its two days after the race, I have stretched and foam rolled, but I’m still pretty tight. I have a personal training session tomorrow morning which I am going to use for some pilates or yoga. I also have a massage tomorrow, yay! I saved up a free massage I earned as a reward for finishing the 10K, so I’m excited to use it!

I’m a bit torn if I should go running today (Monday) or not. I ran a 10K on Saturday..my muscles are a bit sore….should I go run 2 miles? Or wait? The rest recommendations I’ve seen say 4-6 days per hour of running. Even with the 4 days, I shouldn’t run until Wednesday? What do you guys think?

So what’s next? I’m going to focus on speeding up vs. running longer. I’m sticking with the Monster Dash 5K on October 27th. I’m pretty sure I’ll be wearing my Supergirl costume, its pretty running friendly! Wanna run with me? Sign up and let me know!

What races do you have coming up this fall?

Alright running shoes……

Meet biking jersey and biking shorts…..

Now that I’m done with the Minneapolis Marathon Relay I am elated to #1 FIT into my old bike shorts and #2 start training for the Minneapolis Duathlon on Sunday, August 26th!

The Du is a 5K, an 18 mile bike ride, then another 5K.   My friend Kelly, who just finished the GRANDMA’S MARATHON this weekend will be riding in the Du as a veteran. I also have some other friends that are running/biking for the first time like me! I’m super excited for what is supposed to be a fun event.

But, what I’m MORE excited for is to mix in BIKING with my running. Since the running is 6.2 miles total, which I have experience with…(crazy that I can say that!)..since I did the Get Lucky 7K and my portion of the Minneapolis Marathon was 5.5 miles….I can do maintenance on the running front and really get into re-honing my biking skillz.

MS 150 2009

Now, why do I say “re”honing..(as if that’s a word)…because I used to be an AVID biker.  Notice the blue jersey I’m wearing in the 2nd picture?  That’s a National Multiple Sclerosis Society Lifetime Rider jersey. That means that I participated in MS rides for at least 7 years.  Which I did…7 years in a row I did the MS-150 in Minnesota. Which is 2 days, 150 miles of bike riding. I stopped for a couple reasons, #1 my team broke up and #2 my bike was stolen 🙁

Last year I got a new bike and so did my fiancee (teehee, love saying that)…and now I can USE IT!

My first real bike ride back in the saddle is today…with my dad for Father’s Day…we’re going to ride the Greenway to Lake Calhoun…I’m really looking forward to it!

So be prepared to see my stats on Dailymile include running AND biking.

A few other tidbits..

….I’m back full force on my Slimgenics…I didn’t really stop doing it, I just let a few non-plan foods slip in during my engagement and birthday celebrations (only a few days)….I’m down 46 lbs and counting….I want to lose a total of 65 for now (based on how I feel as I get there)…so 19 left!!

In another post I’ll show you the cute new outfits I got from Ann Taylor Loft, I’m so proud to be a size 12 and a Medium there! My favorite store (I kid you not!) It had been so long since I could shop there that my store credit card had deactivated…but now…I’m going to be a regular customer. I used to buy lots of capris and tops from them…but, for the first time in my life…I *love* skirts and dresses! So, watch out world…cute Merbear is coming ‘atcha!

I finally have a treadmill!!! No thanks to w00t.com for not providing my phone number to Fed Ex

Building the treadmill

who tried to contact them three times!  No thanks to Icon Service for packing my treadmill with THE WRONG USER MANUAL.  No thanks to ProForm for repeatedly trying to get me to download the same, wrong user manual over and over.  But THANK YOU to the other people on w00t.com in the user forums that bought the treadmill, figured out it was the wrong manual and how to specifically ask for the right from from Icon Service and THANK YOU to the supervisor at Icon Service who emailed me the right manual.  And HUGE HUGE HUGE thanks to my boyfriend for putting it together!!!!!

I’m down 23.5 lbs officially with Slimgenics….we just got done with a “Biogenic Week” which is 5 days of very low carbs (like only about 200 calories worth a day)…but larger protein servings than normal. Also no club soda, no clear diet soda, no mustard…no extras…just protein, greens, 100 calorie snacks (2 a day).  Then after that we had two days (over the weekend) of Fresh Start days which is a lot like Atkins…as much green raw veggies, fat free dressing, oil, butter and protein as we could eat!  During this Biogenic Week…most people lose basically nothing….well I lost 3/4 lb….and Ryan LOST 4 lbs! That bastard! LOL!

I’ve also been able to dig out a few more tops from my “too small” bin which is awesome, yay for more choices! NSVs baby! I’m enjoying wearing one of my favorite going out shirts again that has a bit of sparkle!

I had an AMAZING sashimi entree at Raku in Edina on Friday night with my girlfriends, check this out:

Tri Color Sashimi - Raku, Edina

Ryan and I are super into green monster shakes to get our veggies in!  Heck if I can drink a yummy shake with 2 servings of spinach in it, I’m all for it!  They are easy to make, pretty easy to clean up and TASTY.  Right now we make them with 2 cups of raw baby spinach leaves, a liquid like Diet Berry 7up or Diet Cherry 7up, and fruit like blueberries or strawberries. Sometimes when I want protein I use plain fat free greek yogurt. I also will put Stevia in there depending on the fruit or if I’m using greek yogurt.  Right now I can’t have bananas or peanut butter, but I can’t wait to incorporate those after Slimgenics.

Putting together a blueberry green monster shake

Ground Turkey Casserole

For dinner tonight I made Ryan and I a casserole so to speak.  I sauteed together celery, green onion and ground turkey.  Then, I combine that in a casserole dish with creamy chicken noodle soup mix and chopped up mushrooms.  That’s all I did for today, but sometimes I also, at this point add in 1/2 cup cooked brown rice.  Then, I bake it for half an hour to solidify it up!  This time since I didn’t put the rice in, Ryan ate his with a piece of toast to scoop it up!

Then, with the other half of the package of ground turkey I made sloppy joe for lunches tomorrow with some chili sauce mix and red peppers mixed in to ground turkey!

Sloppy Joe

So….other than that, my 5K class with the Running Room is over and we are finishing up with the 100% Irish for a Day 5K on Saturday (10th)!  Its over at Lake Harriet and I will be running the entire race at one of my slower paces because all this training I’ve been doing is ACTUALLY in preparation for the Get Lucky 7K on St. Patrick’s Day!  So excited for some running coming up!  I

That’s about it for me for now!

Hi folks!

Omigosh, besides my getting to know you I haven’t posted in awhile, that’s awful, so here’s my updates!

Weight/measurements:

I’m down 16 3/4 lbs!! I started Slimgenics on Jan 9th-ish so I’m into week 5, this is so awesome! I’m also completely out of Lane Bryant land. I can’t wear a stitch of clothing from there except a pair of khakis that I shrunk on purpose, heehee..and they are seriously giving me diaper butt, I refuse to buy new pants yet though!

This week I had two NSVs!  I pulled out a shirt that I haven’t been able to wear for 5 years..and even though 5 years ago I weighed about 15 lbs less, I’m way more fit now…and with the weight loss, it looked so awesome! I danced around the house..my boyfriend thought I was miss crazy, but he was so proud of me and so am I!  Also yesterday I was able to pull a shirt out of my “too small work clothes” bin…oooh yes yes yes! So happy!

Running:

I am halfway through my Running Room 5K class. We are doing 10 min x 1 min twice and then slowly adding on a 3rd set of running, this week its 5 mins.  I ran a bit over 2 miles on Saturday woohoo!

In general:

I kinda feel like my life is:  sleep, workout, work, make dinner, meal prep for the next day, sleep, workout..work…etc etc. But, the “meal prep” is shortening due to getting better on Sundays at making my weekly plan and getting faster at cooking and chopping, etc for the most part.  So I’m getting there 🙂  Our meals have been good and satisfying. My appetite is definitely shrinking, I find myself pushing food around my plate at dinner time…hah, I get such a limited amount of food that is so weird!

I’m finally feeling better, too..I felt like I was dealing with a cold or a headache or something for a whole month and now its all wearing off!

Well, I have to get dressed so I can go workout..hope everyone is doing well!

Finally, something is working!

I’m so happy that I found a program that works, its been one week so far…I’ve made three dinner recipes from my Slimgenics cook book, put together a week long meal plan that for the most part worked out well, but we did make last minute changes here and there. We found some recipes we absolutely love and some other meals that are going to no longer exist, hahaha!

I am learning that cooking meals at home, while taking some planning, is actually really satisfying. Eating meals that you took the time to prepare yourself makes the meal that much more tasty and filling. Its a weird concept, but so true!  We made two dishes this week that we both LOVED. Ryan’s favorite was Curried Chicken…I sauteed pieces of chicken breast then added sliced tomatoes and chopped green onions mixed together with yellow curry powder, parsley flakes and the Simgenics version of chicken noodle soup (any dry chicken noodle should work).  Oh man it was so good! My favorite meal this week was Hamburger Rice Casserole.  I browned ground sirloin with chopped mushrooms, chopped green onions and chopped celery. I poured that all into a baking dish and added in the Slimgenics version of dry creamy chicken noodle soup mix, with the water.  Baked it about 30 minutes until it all firmed up. Yum!

Some of the other foods we at this week were super good in season clementines, jazz apples, sauteed asparagus and “mashed potatoes.” Oh! Let me tell you about the potatoes!  We each used 1 serving of starch for this.  1 mashed together 1/2 baked potato (baked in the microwave) and 1/2 cup of cooked cauliflower each. (So 1 whole baked potato and 1 cup of cauliflower total) I mashed into it 2 TBS of light margarine and a bunch of garlic powder.  Soo good, skin on garlic mashed potatoes with added bulk of cauliflower was a pretty big serving and had hidden vegetables for the boyfriend 😉

So, what else went on this week? Oooh…yeah…I lost 7 lbs! Woohoo! I should lose 3-5 lbs every week, this week was more because its the first week and we did 3 days of “detox”, too…which is just at the beginning of the program.  I feel SO much better, too.  I don’t feel bloated, just “fat” but that’ll go away as the weeks go on, haha!  My skin is clearer from eating basic foods, no alcohol, no preservatives, lots of water. My mood is pretty boosted from just feeling good and healthy. The only time I’m kinda crabby is if I’m running late for dinner, but I’m hungry, haha!

I’m getting used to the amount of food, too.  Unlike Weight Watchers, where you get less points as you lose weight. On Slimgenics you eat the same amount of food the whole time, so obviously my body needs to get used to it.  Having the Herbal Slim appetite suppressants, the Slimgenics branded “Thermo Snacks” and “Thermo Boosts” to add in during my day and lots of water helps though 🙂 The only way you get more food is if you majorly increase your activity to like an hour or more a DAY…yeah..I exercise a lot but not that much 🙂

My exercise plans are going well, too. I’m still actively lifting 2x a week for 30 minutes with my trainers at LA Fitness and I’m doing a 5K running class with the Running Room. We meet on Saturdays for a lesson/tips for the 1st half hour and then the 2nd half of class we run together.  Our homework is doing two training runs during the week, which I’m also doing. So running 3x a week, plus maybe elliptical a 4th day and lifting. I say I’m a healthy active girl!  As the fat melts off my muscles will finally start showing!

My most difficult day this week was definitely Thursday. It was the 1st day of eating planned out foods on the regular plan (after 3 days of detox).  Also, Thursdays are my longest day…aka I get up at 6am…go lift weights and run, then work til 6pm, then finally get home.  Yup…long day. So long day and heavy exercise means HUNGRY!  I was feeling woozy as I drove home and called ahead to Ryan to have him start the oven and some of the cooking prep for the curried chicken.  I talked to a Slimgenics counselor about what happened on Friday and she was SUPER helpful. She reminded me that I can have a 3rd Thermo snack to replace my dairy as long as I use one of the higher calcium Thermo Snacks…we also structured a day out better where I have a bit more “bulk” in my AM/early afternoon meals so that I don’t feel so empty by late dinner time.  Another note on that day was that I could hardly finish my dinner..yep I went from STARVING to full pretty quickly….probably because of the late hour. So, dinners will be smaller on Thursdays with more snacks and filling stuff during the day to help stave off the extra hunger pangs from my workout, I think that makes sense!

Alright that has been quite the bit of babbling for today…I hope I shared enough info so you guys can get an idea of what I’m doing on the plan and how well its working!  I had a few questions through out the week about what it was and how I was doing! So there ya go! Feel free to ask me questions on Twitter and on here.

P.S. Slimgenics does not know I’m writing about them, they haven’t asked me to write about them, I’m not being compensated in any way, these are all my opinions, I’m just doing it cause its  working and I’m happy!

HUGS!

5K Running Class

I signed up for a 5K class! Those of you that have been reading know that I did Couch to 5K already, but I mostly did it alone and mostly on the treadmill.  I’m able to finish a 5k…but my times get worse #1 when I go outside and #2 now that its cold.  The two 5Ks I just did were both over 40 minutes, mostly because of me not being used to being outside, especially in winter.

I signed up for a 5K training class that is put on by The Running Room.  They are all over the US and Canada, so perhaps you have heard of them!  I’m going to a class in the uptown location right by me in Minneapolis, MN.

During the class we get a mini seminar first at 10am on Saturday mornings, about different running topics like shoes, clothes, pacing, hearing from an expert, etc.  Then, we do our interval run. We need to do two runs every week on our own as well so we can be prepared for the intervals.

I loved being surrounded by a group of runners with the same goal as me…finishing a 5K well! Everyone in the group already knows how to run “or else they would have taken the ‘Learn to Run’ class.” They are also all interested in conditioning for outdoor winter running.  Heck, if I get the winter running down, summer will be easy!

My next race is actually a 7K on St. Patricks Day, March 17th.  But, I know if I work hard at this class, adding another 2K (about a mile and a half) will be fine. Plus, as I’m doing this training the weather should be getting better (as we get into March) AND I will be losing weight with Slimgenics (will talk about more in my next post). So, running should be getting easier for multiple reasons…breathing outside, getting oxygen pumped around my shrinking body, and increasing intervals.  I’m so excited for this!

In our first class we walked out the door of The Running Room and down to Lake of the Isles, we did 5 min run/1 min walk, 4 intervals, turned around in the middle.  We’ll keep using Lake of the Isles for awhile, so at least we’ll get used to the terrain.  The path had a few icy patches, so we’re getting our footing with that as well.  This week our “homework” is to do 7 min run/1 min walk…at any pace we want. I will do my best to keep up with the group’s pace, which was about 13 min/mile for the running…I’ll be trying to do those outside, but if I can’t…I’ll definitely be on the treadmill. But at least every Saturday I’ll be outside running at the lake with my class.

Thought I’d give you guys an update! If you are interested in learning more about the class check out The Running Room!

**Oh, just thought I”d mention the Running Room doesn’t know I’m writing about them and they haven’t encouraged me to write about them or compensated me in any way**
