I chatted a bit about this in my PNP Trackstar Challenge Facebook group, so thanks to those of you that are reading this again. I thought this would be a good topic to bring up to all my readers.

I haven’t been to a WW meeting for two weeks until today (I was on business trips, couldn’t find another meeting out of town that would fit in either)…..I’m up 9 lbs from my last weigh in. Ugh. I’m very glad that I don’t have any more traveling for quite awhile..and this was the first time I have ever traveled for work. So, I think I will recoup (I actually reset my WW start weight to start over)….and I will be ready with a plan next time I business travel.

There are things that I need to remember to plan ahead for:

1) Barley’s Angel’s meetings..there will be beer..I will be tasting it and discussing it with my friends (1x a month)

2) Parties on weekends….my friends get together and do gaming parties with lots of snacks and alcohol

3) No last minute food challenges…have snacks on hand, meal plans on hand, preview menus or have a plan for when I can’t preview a menu

4) I’m a foodie and a beer geek…there are so many awesome (healthy or not so healthy) things to try out there…I want to try them because I love the variety and trying new things….same with when I see a new beer that I haven’t tried…need to save my activity and weekly extra points for those NOT for a random snack on a Tuesday night unless I’m hungry and need it!

We know what has worked for me before, I lost about 4 lbs at my meeting two weeks ago…so what gives? What worked?

1) Meal Planning – it was fun, I loved knowing what meals I could make/have ready all week and I loved having leftovers and lunches!

2) Previewing menus before going out – decide what I want ahead of time..so that I can just enjoy the company when I’m out

3) Bring my own snacks and drinks to house parties, no one cares what I’m drinking

4) Be my own best friend, put myself first…its hard for me to say no when I have pressure (even if its fun, non-threatening pressure)

5) I am better at managing my choices when I get my anxiety in check, so I need to meditate/yoga/exercise/take some me time DAILY

6) I feel like my Weight Watcher’s meetings are Wednesdays are definitely important, but its a group and not a buddy, I need to find a buddy who is doing Weight Watchers and also “gets it”, someone from my regular day-to-day life. I have so many support groups online…so I’m reaching out to friends who may want to be a buddy.

I’d love some suggestions you guys might have about eating out, needing a snack last minute..what do you eat?,

What you might do if you have several “food related” things going on in one week…..

What do you do to have some “me” time..how do you make sure and take it?

I’m glad that I finished Slimgenics…that wasn’t real life…it was SO restrictive so I know why I lost all the weight, but I wasn’t going to be able to maintain that lifestyle…I can’t say no to everything , all the time for the rest of my life.  Weight Watchers has taught me some great lessons on building healthy spaces, meal planning, etc…I just need to get it INTO MY HEAD!

Also, I LOVE that it is finally brightening up and getting a bit warmer here in Minnesnowta!  I am so much better at exercising when I can get outside!!!! Go away winter blahs!!! I need to get my running times back to something acceptable and I want to get back on my bike! YAY!!!

Tonight I tweeted out that I felt another whiny blog post coming on and my awesome friends reached out to me.

So instead I want to talk about how important feeling and getting out your feelings can be.

If I hadn’t have shared how I was feeling, Dawn wouldn’t have asked me what was up. Reaching out and telling her & the Twitterverse that I felt like a failure for gaining the weight back that I lost last week and that I was fearing more failure this weekend, empowered me to be open to solving the problem.

Dawn, Liz and other friends tweeted and messaged me that tomorrow is a new day, to focus on what I’d important, get a new start, make new decisions. They are so right. I needed to hear that my guilt about gaining and wanting to sabotage another day are in my head and not that messed up or unsolvable.

Saturday, here in the twin cities, is the Zombie Pub Crawl. I was worried that crawling from bar to bar with my friends would just be way too tempting, after the disappointing week weight wise I’ve had, to not just give in and eat and drink whatever I choose. But, its not true, my supportive friends helped me see that there’s the fun of dressing like a zombie, spending the evening being silly with my friends, hearing bands, dancing, rides and karaoke to look forward to.

I’m in control, I know this now. I’m not saying I won’t have a beer or two, or some special zombie treat. I just don’t have a reason to be worried about it anymore. The night is mine!

Thank you friends, you know who you are, vocal or not this particular evening you are all in my head, cheering for my success.

Oh and P.S. For the first time ever I bought a regular sized, kinda naughty, Halloween costume! Yess!

It’s been a long and amazing day.

I could hardly sleep, eyes wide open at 7am. I checked into the marathon tracker app to see that Kelly, runner #1 on my team, started promptly at
6:30am on her 6 miles. She would be followed by Corryn doing 5.5 and then Amanda doing 9.2! I was scheduled for the last leg, 5.5 miles and I was pumped! I planned to get to my relay exchange point at 10am….I could have slept til 8:30, but there was no way!

I got dressed in the outfit I picked and laid out the night before and headed downstairs. I saw on the tracker app that Kelly had finished and she was FAST. For my own sanity I recalculated everyone’s leg start/finish times based on Kelly’s speedy finish and texted them to my team mates via Twitter, cuz I’m a geek 🙂

Ryan woke up and made me eggs and toast for breakfast. Then, I scrambled around making sure I had everything. I did, but I checked and double checked. Sunglasses, Road ID, race bib, iPod, Garmin……engagement ring & key necklace.

Why jewelry? Because running isn’t just about physical ability….it’s also mental…lots of determination and focus. I’m out there, just me and my thoughts. I want to not only think about one foot in front of the other….but also how awesome my life is right now. I’m a healthier weight, I can run, I have amazing friends, I am in love with a man who gave me the “key to his heart” aka the necklace and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. So that jewelry keeps me going with a big smile on my face!

We met up with my friends at my exchange point and I stretched, used the biff a few times nervously and chatted. Then, we saw her coming….I put in my headphones…..gave Amanda a huuuuge congratulatory hug…put on the relay chip, and I was off!

The path was beautiful…and kinda empty. The fast relayers were done, lots of full marathoners had finished, too. A lot of spectators had already left….but it was okay….I enjoyed the peace….getting into my zone….being pushed along every once in awhile by the cheerers that were there. I PR’ed the first 5K, did it in 37:45! Then I kept on trucking the final 2 miles and came in at an average of 12:40 min/mile for my 5.5! My team did the entire Minneapolis Marathon in 5 hrs and 12 mins!

As approached the finish line my team member Kelly, her husband Sean, and my good friend Mel ran me in! I felt so amazing and I got in about 5 mins sooner than we all predicted.

I feel amazing.

Goodnight.

Fueling right, sleeping well, practicing, attitude, motivation and being healthy allowed me to run 3 miles today at a 12:12 pace, yet again another PR, improvement from 12:40 last weekend!

So, what’s been going on lately? Lots!

I’m officially down 35lbs which feels really good. I can see the definition that I’ve been working on for the last couple years of weight lifting actually starting to emerge from under the fat. I’m really excited to finally see that change. I’m still surprised when I put on a shirt and my tummy doesn’t stick out automatically. My default stature so to speak no longer has a tummy pooch, it’s so weird!
My boyfriend said to me last night that I’m probably a lot closer to bikini ready than I think I am. Woohoo!

Per our initial Slimgenics body type, height etc estimates I still have 25 lbs to go…but I dunno, I can see 15 coming off my butt and hips, perhaps the rest is just here and there and internal? My body from my true waist up is pretty good, my trouble area is the bad-donk-a-donk and it has a bit more to go for sure 😉

This last week I had two days of Slimgenics “detox” and boy, a good way to appreciate the main Slimgenics plan is to be on two days of a stricter version of it! Detox days include a whole grapefruit as breakfast, lettuce only salads with apple cider vinegar and a bit of dressing with lunch and dinner, chicken and parsley for lunch, fish and parsley for dinner and 2 cups of cucumber slices with apple cider vinegar as a snack, plus two of the low calorie thermogenic snacks. I wasn’t hungry, but I also didn’t have enough energy to run, so I had to skip a day. I definitely did feel like the detox cleared me out and I definitely had a nice weight loss whoosh the day after I finished detox.

One of my counselors did advice that Ryan and I eat beef more often and we can’t argue with that, yum! It is a limited food item so we have to space it out, but now we are definitely including steak or ground sirloin into our meal plans at least once a week if not twice!

I was having trouble with being hungry and even getting headaches on the days when I ran…and Slimgenics now allows 6 ozs of Greek yogurt your milk serving and not just as a protein. So, we figured out if I eat Greek yogurt as a small breakfast before I workout, replacing my daily milk, and then after my workout I have eggs and then my 2nd protein for dinner….I’m refueling my body a lot better than a protein bar or starches can and it has worked out really well for me! Yay more yogurt and protein!

Last weekend I took a big step and cleared out all of the clothes in my closet that are too big. All that stuff was actually pretty nice because I bought most of it last spring, summer and even fall of 2011 when I was at my highest weight ever. Those clothes were not just baggy on me but literally wouldn’t stay on….so time to admit I would never be back in them and to get them out! My closet is pretty empty now, but at least everything in it I can actually wear. I am slowly refilling it with clothing items I have had stored away that are starting to fit again which is exciting! But, I’m kind of at a stage right now where the saved clothes are about 1 or 2 sizes too small…I may have to buy a pair of work pants to help in between, I’m thinking Old Navy sale rack! But boy am I looking forward to wearing my Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and Express pants and tops again soon!

Since my PR in running outside two weeks ago I have successfully done more 3 mile runs with an under 13 min mile average and now my standard run length is 3 miles. Woohoo, my practice runs are 5ks, that makes me feel pretty cool. My first 4 miler is coming up next week if I don’t miss any runs this week. I hope I can do them all!

Tomorrow, for the first time ever in my life, I will be trying on a formal dress that is not a plus size! I’m going to be picking my bridesmaid dress for my best friend’s wedding, I’m sooooo pumped! For the wedding and that I have more choices and I just don’t have to go with the “kinder” dress styles, we have a few to pick from.

I want to give a shout out to my marathon relay girls – Corryn, Amanda and Kelly! We are SO gonna rock the Minneapolis Marathon, I’m so lucky to know you girls and I truly value our friendship and the fact that we can sweat together, too! Woohoo!

Okay this has gotten long, so I will say next week is a Slimgenics biogenic week then fresh start weekend so we get bigger protein servings, no starches and smaller snacks M-F and then unlimited protein, only green veggies and no starches on the weekend. I’m actually looking forward to it for two reasons #1 This week leads to a nice weight loss whoosh the following week and #2 It comes just in time for sushi on Friday night…woohoo extra sushi and a BBQ for my sister’s bday on Sun…yessss more steak and chicken please!

Hugs!

On Saturday I had my first long run assignment from my Runner’s World Smart Coach program. As I’ve mentioned I’m running a 6 mile portion of the Minneapolis Marathon as part of a fabulous relay team of awesome girlfriends! I’m doing an eleven week 10k training plan.

So far on the plan I’m following the guidelines and pacing myself at an easy sustainable pace, but it seems I’m already getting used to the 2 miles and my 3 miles wasn’t too big of a stretch for the long run. I was prepared to run slower than on the treadmill cuz #1 outside seems more challenging #2 I hadn’t done a 3 mile training run yet and #3 my 5ks take me over 40 mins still.

But, I got myself out on Lake Calhoun and just thought, “Mer, it’s nice out here, you don’t have a goal pace, just a distance….you aren’t trying to keep up with anyone….just use this as an opportunity to enjoy the lake, relax your mind and just go…”

So, I did….and I ran the fastest I ever have for a sustained amount of time, with no stopping, no walking….just going…. 12:40 minute mile for 3 miles! Yaaaay MEEE!

This weekend was wonderful….the weather, a run and relaxing.

I started out my weekend with a yummy dinner at Tavern on France with my friends. They have a tasty build your own salad there so I can make it right on plan with Slimgenics. On top of the big base of romaine lettuce I chose to skip the cheese and “crunch” choices. I did choose to have grilled portabello mushrooms and beef tenderloin slices 🙂 I also ordered a side dish of roasted red potatoes, mmmm!

We decided to grab lattes and gather around a BONFIRE, yes a bonfire in my back yard, in March at night! It was around 74 degrees at 10pm, yay!

20120318-133218.jpg

I cashed it in early though so I could get up at 7am for the Get Lucky 7K! The day was beautiful and the race route was two, we started in downtown Minneapolis and ran over the Mississippi twice. The race had something like 7,000 runners! I ran the whole thing, but very slowly. But I did it! I’ve never run further than a 5K, not even in a practice run! I came in under 60 minutes, which I thought rocked for me! I kept within a 13:30 min mile. I finished and I got my medal. Next race: 6 miles of the Minneapolis Marathon for my portion of the relay.

20120318-135007.jpg

For St. Patrick’s Day I wanted to enjoy a green drink, but this year I wanted it to be healthy and I wanted to refuel from after my run, too! So I had a GREEN monster shake! Two cups of spinach, about 12 strawberries, a dash of stevia about 3 ounces of Diet Cherry 7UP and its Healthy and Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Oh, also for a progress update, I’m down 27 3/4 lbs! Woohoo!

Phew….glad that week is over..long weekend coming up, will include some running, weight lifting, sleeping in, dinner with my parents, cleaning and some..and I love the sound of this..doing NOTHING

I swear Slimgenics makes the weeks go by even faster….with meal planning and cooking in between everything else life has to offer. But as the weeks go by the weight goes down, too. I know I’m going to lose every week as I follow the plan, but I must let the time pass and I must follow the plan daily for it to work. No way to speed it up or anything…so go time go!

This week I was able to wear 3 items out of my “small clothes” bin to work…it made me feel so good! I lost another 1 lb this week but I think that’s because of girly stuffs and my body is just shifting around, which has gotta happen when you are losing weight quickly.  17 lbs down baby!

I wanted to show you guys a new dinner I cooked up tonight.  It was so savory and tasty, but fast, too. All of 15 minutes from start to finish!

Curry Green Beans and Broiled Tilapia

Meal for two

Curry Green Beans:

  • 1 steam bag (about 4 cups) of cooked green beans, drained
  • 4 TBS of minced onion flakes (soaked in a bit of water)
  • 3/4 TBS of curry powder
  • dash of salt
  1. Spray a pan with cooking spray and saute the soaked onion flakes for a few minutes on their own
  2. Add the curry powder and saute together for about 3 minutes.
  3. Finally add the cooked green beans and a bit of salt. You might add a maximum of 2 TBS of water so it won’t burn, but you probably won’t need it.  Saute all together another 5 minutes.

Broiled Tilapia

  • 12 ozs (two 6ish oz filets) of tilapia (or any other white fish like orange roughy)
  • dash of paprika
  • dash of dill
  • dash of salt
  1. Spray a broiling pan with cooking spray.
  2. Place the filets on the pan and sprinkle with spices…I like more dill than paprika personally.
  3. Broil for about 6 minutes…check halfway and maybe turn the pan around.
  4. Fish should be flaky, but not dry or fried, white through out and no clear spots

I hope everyone has a great weekend! Let me know if you try the recipes and if you like them! For Slimgenics this dinner was 2 vegetable servings and 1 protein serving per peson

Yup, scarf and hat, it was 35 degrees this morning and I've been sick, big smile tho!

I’ve been sick all week and haven’t been able to workout much…but I did get in my minimum 5 miles for  #POTM and I stuck with #DontEatTheTreat but I did manage to gain some weight. It wasn’t all this week, it was the end of October…but this last week didn’t help with taking cough syrup at night, ibuprofen and cold pills during the day, etc…it keeps me kinda fluffy for awhile.

I woke up last Saturday with a super sore throat, that through the week turned in to the inability to swallow without wincing, an awful loud cough, weird stuff in the back of my throat, a visit to the doctor and finally a diagnosis of strep throat.  Not the regular kind though, but the kind that sometimes people don’t even treat they just let it torture them for a week or so. I finally got my diagnosis and pills on Thursday, by which time I was no longer contagious and already starting to feel better. But I figured I don’t want that awful painful swallowing or gross hacking to come back again so I’m taking the full round of antibiotics to make sure.

The daily coughing and the 8 hours a day on the phone at work finally wore down my throat by this morning. I hardly have a voice. I decided to take today off work so I wouldn’t have to speak and its working.  I said goodbye to Ryan around 8am when he left the house and I have only since then said hello to my trainer at LA Fitness when I saw her. Otherwise, I have been a lady in silence all day.  Well, vocal silence, I’m still on Twitter and Facebook 🙂

Since I had the time today I walked to LA Fitness (a good 1.8 miles one way), then I walked on the treadmill while reading my Kindle and walked home again.  I took my time, enjoyed the beautiful fall day, took a nice shower and I’m continuing my day of quiet 🙂  My walk was so pretty, some of the last of the fall colors:

For those of you who know me you’ll probably be surprised, but I kinda like it 🙂 Not answering any questions, not making small talk, not trying to entertain or be polite to anyone, just me, myself and I hanging out together.

My weekend plans include a girls night out with Kris, Corryn, Deanna, Kat, Kelly and Mel..I’m so looking forward to spending time with girls that share the same focus on health as I do. We are going to Midori’s Floating World Cafe and then to see Midnight in Paris! I’m craving some sushi and popcorn tonight!

This weekend I also plan to do an outdoor run for 45 – 60 minutes, I’ve so far not been able to accomplish this since I set it in my running goals to prep for the next 5K due to being ill. Ryan also wants to start running with me because he’s running the Turkey Day 5K as well!

I will be doing some major work on the yard and house with the boyfriend this weekend, too. Our big tree in the backyard drops leaves at the very last minute every year..usually when they start dropping you know it’s going to snow in about a week…so for us its wait wait wait wait…rake like mad people….snow.   We’ll see if the tree is right this year, too!

Have a wonderful weekend!
